How to Audit Your Website for AI Visibility (DIY Checklist)

Before you hire anyone, you can check your own site for the most common AI visibility problems. This 10-point checklist covers the factors that determine whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews can find and cite your business. Each check takes 2 to 5 minutes. The full audit takes under an hour.

The 10-Point AI Visibility Checklist

1. Test your AI presence directly. Open ChatGPT and ask: “What is the best [your service] in [your city]?” Then ask: “Tell me about [your business name].” Do the same in Perplexity. If your business does not appear in any response, you have an AI visibility problem. Document the results as your baseline.

2. Check your opening paragraphs. Visit your homepage, your top service page, and your top location page. Read the first 200 words of each. Can you identify your business name, what you do, where you are located, and one specific differentiator? If not, AI cannot either. 44 percent of ChatGPT citations come from the first 30 percent of a page.

3. Check for schema markup. Go to search.google.com/test/rich-results and enter your homepage URL. Then test your top service page and a location page. If the tool shows no structured data detected, you have zero schema. Most business websites fail this check.

4. Check for FAQ sections. Do your service pages and location pages have FAQ blocks with specific questions and direct answers? If no, you are missing the content format that nearly doubles AI citation chances. For guidance on writing them, see our post on FAQ sections for AI.

5. Check your content freshness. When was the last time your key pages were updated? Check the page source or your CMS for last modified dates. Content updated within 3 months gets nearly twice the AI citations as older content.

6. Check for broken links. Use a free tool like Broken Link Checker or Screaming Frog (free version crawls up to 500 URLs) to scan your site. Every broken link is a crawl error that signals neglect.

7. Check your Google Business Profile. Is your GBP claimed and verified? Are the hours correct? Do you have at least 10 reviews? Have you posted in the last month? Is the Q and A section populated? An incomplete GBP weakens your entity signal for both Google and AI.

8. Check your review presence. Do you have profiles on Yelp, BBB, and Apple Maps? Are they claimed with accurate information? Businesses with active review platform profiles are cited 3 times more often by AI.

9. Check your internal linking. Pick 3 blog posts at random. Do they link to any service pages? Do any service pages link back to them? If your blog posts are orphaned (no inbound internal links), they are invisible to crawlers and AI.

10. Check your page speed. Run your homepage through PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev). If your Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) is above 3 seconds, your site experienced 23 percent more traffic loss in the December 2025 Google core update than faster sites.

How to Score Yourself

Give yourself 1 point for each check that passes. 0 for each that fails.

8 to 10: Your site has a solid foundation. Fine-tuning and ongoing optimization will produce results.

5 to 7: You have gaps that are costing you AI visibility. Targeted fixes will produce measurable improvement.

Below 5: Your site has fundamental problems that prevent both Google ranking and AI citation. Start with the basics: schema, content structure, and GBP.

What This Checklist Does Not Cover

This DIY audit checks the most impactful factors but does not replace a professional assessment. It cannot score your content quality page by page, identify forbidden phrases, map your full internal linking architecture, or test your AI visibility across dozens of prompts.

iORSO’s AEO readiness audit uses the Bridge platform to score every page on your site from 0 to 100, identify every broken link, every orphan page, every schema gap, and produce a prioritized fix list. It starts at $1,500.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does this DIY audit take?

Under an hour for all 10 checks. Most individual checks take 2 to 5 minutes.

What should I fix first if I fail multiple checks?

Schema markup and opening paragraph content. These are the fastest to fix and have the most immediate impact on AI visibility.

Is this checklist enough or do I need a professional audit?

This checklist catches the biggest problems. A professional audit scores every page, identifies issues you cannot check manually, and produces a prioritized action plan.

How often should I run this checklist?

Quarterly. AI visibility factors (content freshness, review count, platform presence) change over time.

Can I fix everything on this checklist myself?

Most items yes. Schema deployment and internal linking architecture may benefit from professional help depending on your technical comfort level.
